Lilongwe, Malawi, 21 July 2026 – Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe, healthy and supportive environment. Across Malawi’s Lilongwe and Kasungu districts, that opportunity has been strengthened for more than 3,000 learners through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by the African Trade & Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI).
The initiative, implemented in partnership with Malawi’s Ministry of Education and the High Commission of Malawi in Kenya, financed the construction of fully equipped water boreholes and the provision of double-seater school desks across six schools in Lilongwe and Kasungu districts. The project is improving access to safe drinking water for more than 3,000 students and creating more conducive learning environments, and reducing waterborne diseases in schools, particularly for those preparing for national examinations.
Reliable access to safe water is enabling healthier school communities while also benefiting neighbouring households. At the same time, new classroom furniture is giving learners a more comfortable and dignified space to study, learn and achieve their potential. At one beneficiary school, where a cholera outbreak once threatened closure, the borehole has become a lifeline, serving more than 100 families every day. The initiative reflects ATIDI’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in the communities it serves. By investing in practical solutions that improve education and well-being, ATIDI is helping create lasting benefits that extend beyond the classroom.

The project has already made a meaningful difference in the daily lives of students and teachers. While challenges remain in many schools, the smiles of children now drinking clean water, concentrating in class and sitting at a desk for the first time are a powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins with simple acts that restore dignity and investing in people and communities that drive the continent’s future.
